Brida by Paulo Coelho

2008 October 19

To be frank, Brida is a rather disappointing sermon on the Traditions.  For the first three-quarters of the book, I almost felt like was being preached to.  Lectured, definitely, on the differences between the paths of the two Traditions.  Though interested in a mild way, I was also quite bored, hence the amount of time it took me to actually finish.  I’d read a few sentences, maybe a paragraph or two, then I’d put it down in search of something more stimulating.  But, this morning, I made myself sit down and finish.

The only interesting thing in the book was the potential love triangles, which turned out not to be so interesting at all, because they never actually materialized.  Only the Magus and his emotional struggles save this book from complete mediocrity.

If you have never read Coelho, I recommend you don’t start with Brida.  Instead, read The Alchemist.  Or even The Witch of Portobello.

    Hello!

I’m a big fan of Paulo Coelho! You will love this! He’s the first best-selling author to be distributing for free his works on his blog:

I’m actually reading that book now and well I’d been seeing a lot of bad reviews about it.

Let me ask you a question: Why do you think you were being preached to while reading this book?

I can never get why people say this about Paolo Coelho’s books.
