Dragonheart by Todd McCaffrey
Okay, talk about leaving someone hanging. The next one had better start off where this one ends. I mean, in general, you know what happens next if you’ve read Dragonsblood, but you don’t know what actually happened, specifically, at Fort Weyr. I assume that Igen is re-inhabited after the Dragon Plague, but we don’t know because of a totally excellent, and totally annoying, cliffhanger.
Dragonheart isn’t as good as Dragonsblood. It’s less emotionally intense. Or, that is, less intense emotions were conveyed to me. I cried in places while reading Dragonsblood. Not so with Dragonheart.
There is hope, though. According to what Mr. McCaffrey says in a Del Rey Internet Newsletter article, we will reunite with Kindan and Lorana, hinting at at least four more books. Yay! To read the article, click here.

I have to say that never have I been more disappointed with a Pern novel. I own every one in the series except Dragonsblood, grew up worshipping Menolly, and cried my eyes out over Robinton’s death, Lorana’s Queen, the fate of Moretta, and of course sobbed completly through Dragon Harper…At Christmas I bought Dragonheart, read it over the course of a few hours, set the book down and called my mother to wail about how much this book jumps from one moment to the next so you never really know what is happening to Fiona…who the mystery Weyrwoman is (even though there are hints that it is either Fiona or Xhinna) and why the book just stops with her coming home instead of telling more about how Fort Weyr dealt with the illness of the dragons. I am sorry to say that I was very put out with the rush and planning of this book and hope that Todd will accomplish more of what he managed with Dragonsblood in the next effort.
