Antony and Cleopatra by Colleen McCullough

The Masters of Rome never fail to make laugh, and Antony and Cleopatra (called Queen of the Beasts in the UK) is no exception.  I immensely enjoyed this last volume in the series.

For those of you unfamiliar with this series, they are about the men who lead Rome at the end of the Republic, and their women.  The first book, The First Man in Rome, is about the rise of Gaius Marius.  From there, we go through Lucius Cornelius Sulla, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great), Gaius Julius Caesar Dictator, Marcus Antonius, and Gaius Octavius, and everyone in between.

These books are truly excellent reading.  Vastly entertaining.  I highly recommend them.  In order:

  • The First Man in Rome
  • The Grass Crown
  • Fortune’s Favorites
  • Caesar’s Women
  • Caesar:  Let the Dice Fly High
  • The October Horse
  • Antony and Cleopatra
